How to Calculate Your College & High School GPA: Weighted vs. Unweighted Scales

Your Grade Point Average (GPA) is the standardized metric used by universities, scholarship committees, honor societies, and graduate schools to evaluate academic consistency. Because courses carry different credit-hour weights, a simple average of your letter grades will not give you your true GPA—you must calculate a credit-weighted average using quality points.

The Standard 4.0 Scale & Quality Points Formula

Every letter grade corresponds to a numerical grade point value on the standard 4.0 scale. To find the Quality Points earned in a class, multiply the course’s credit hours by the numerical grade value:

Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points Earned ÷ Total Credit Hours Attempted
Letter Grade Percentage Equivalent Unweighted 4.0 Scale Weighted Honors (+0.5) Weighted AP / IB (+1.0)
A+ / A 93% – 100% 4.0 4.5 5.0
A- 90% – 92% 3.7 4.2 4.7
B+ 87% – 89% 3.3 3.8 4.3
B 83% – 86% 3.0 3.5 4.0
B- 80% – 82% 2.7 3.2 3.7
C+ / C / C- 70% – 79% 2.3 / 2.0 / 1.7 2.8 / 2.5 / 2.2 3.3 / 3.0 / 2.7
D / F Below 70% 1.0 / 0.0 1.0 / 0.0 1.0 / 0.0

Worked Semester GPA Calculation

Suppose a university student completes four courses during the fall semester:

  • Calculus I (4 credits): Grade = A (4.0) → 4 × 4.0 = 16.0 quality points
  • Organic Chemistry Lab (4 credits): Grade = B+ (3.3) → 4 × 3.3 = 13.2 quality points
  • Macroeconomics (3 credits): Grade = A- (3.7) → 3 × 3.7 = 11.1 quality points
  • English Composition (3 credits): Grade = B (3.0) → 3 × 3.0 = 9.0 quality points

Sum the credits (4 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 14 credits) and sum the quality points (16.0 + 13.2 + 11.1 + 9.0 = 49.3 points). Divide 49.3 ÷ 14 = 3.52 GPA, qualifying for the Dean’s List! You can track your courses and test "what-if" scenarios using our GPA Calculator.

Latin Honors & Academic Standing Thresholds

While exact cutoffs vary by institution, most US universities award undergraduate Latin honors at graduation based on these cumulative GPA tiers:

  • Cum Laude (With Honor): 3.50 to 3.69 GPA
  • Magna Cum Laude (With High Honor): 3.70 to 3.89 GPA
  • Summa Cum Laude (With Highest Honor): 3.90+ GPA
